Mat 1127 Overview --Introductory Statistics

Text: David S. Moore's book Basic Practice of Statistics, 2nd Edition, Freeman, 2000.  Used texts are ok.  The new texts should have Minitab bundled with them.

Before 3rd class meeting:  1.  Purchase a 3 1/2 inch floppy.  2.  Log onto the the University net work and send me email (jkyates@mindspring.com)

Purchase by 2nd week a calculator which will compute two variable statistics.  Should be able to find one for under $20.00.  Possible Calculators


Five tests plus a final exam will be given. Expect a test about every three weeks. The final exam is recorded as two test scores which will give a total of 7 test scores. Daily quizzes and Minitab assignments will count 20%.   Students may drop the lowest test score but not the class quizzes/computer assignments score. If you do not take the final, your score on any missed test is zero. If you miss any of the five tests, your final exam score will be substituted for each test missed. Calculators may be used on all tests.

Minitab Labs.  Four computer lab projects will be assigned.  Look on my Math 1127  (was 1227) homepage under Labs and follow links for complete instructions for each Minitab lab.

Makeup Tests. There are no makeup tests. Your final exam score is substituted for any test missed.

Final Grade. Daily Quizzes  will count 10 percent. Minitab assignments  will count 10 percent.The other tests will count 80 percent of your final grade. 


Withdrawal Policy: See Department Information Deadline for withdrawal without receiving a WF is the midterm of the course. See schedule booklet for midterm of the spring semester. The midterm of most courses is October 15th.

Class attendance policy is that given in the 2001/2002 Columbus State University Catalog. Students should have nothing else scheduled meeting time of this class. If you have a conflict, please contact your instructor. See Department Information

Class behavior. Disruptive students may be dismissed without warning.
